State Wrestling Tournament: Dora’s Warren wins gold
Story from The Daily Mountain Eagle

Chase WarrenHUNTSVILLE — Dora’s Chase Warren overcame a strong start by Leeds’ Torren Pollard to score a pinfall victory and win the AHSAA state championship final for the 138-pound division on Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. Pollard put together a 10-2 lead through the first round of the match on takedown scores, before Warren began to make strides of his own throughout the second round on reversals and takedowns of his own. At the 1:29 mark in the second round, Warren maneuvered Pollard into a pinning position until the match officials counted the pinfall. The championship victory was the first in the Dora senior’s career, who finished the season with a 61-4 record. “Winning the state title means everything to me, as I haven’t decided whether I’m going to wrestle in college or not — so this may have been my last chance to do something in this sport,” Warren said. “I’ve been wrestling since the eighth grade, but I never took it seriously until last year. I had to make up a lot of ground, so it made this championship run so much more important considering all the hard work I had to do to get here.” As a team, the Bulldogs finished fifth overall in the Class 1-5A standings with 94 points. Recio Winchester (113 lbs.), Austin Everett (132 lbs.) and Caleb Lauderdale (170 lbs.) all finished as state runner-ups after advancing to the championship final. The Sumiton Christian Eagles finished the tournament at the 18th spot with 43 team points. Tommy Woodall (120 lbs.), Joseph Thompson (126 lbs.) and Mat McGough (160 lbs.) all ended the tournament in sixth place in their respective weight classes. Corner’s Reed Murphy advanced to the consolation finals and earned the third-place spot in the 285 lbs. division.
