It
Wasn't Pretty, But The Dawgs Win Against Cordova 33 to 11
The Dawgs turned the ball over at least 5 times to the Cordova
Blue Devils but still managed to pull out a win. More photos
and a story on Friday. Whitt Wright scampers in for his
first high school touchdown.
The 2005 Bulldogs look very good on defense this year, but
the offense had trouble holding on to the ball. In the half
alone the Dawgs turned the ball over four times on three
fumbles and an interception.
The Blue Devils payed tough in the first half only allowing
one 85 yard scamper by Marquis Chapel.
"I was nervous, sweating. I don't know what you call
it. I was anxious. I felt like we could move the ball, but
I was thinking that if we continued to turn over the ball
we were in trouble," Wright said.
The second half was a different story with several in the
Bulldog backfield scoring. Cedric East, Whit Wright and
Justin Woods each ran for touchdowns. Marquis Chapel was
hampered for most of the night with leg cramps.
On the night, Dora rushed for 400 yards on 41 carries with
both Eric Woods and Chapel breaking the 100-yard barrier.
Early in the second half, East scored with a five-yard touchdown
run right through the middle of the Cordova defense. This
score was made possible with a long run by Eric Woods. Anthony
Valdez kicked the extra point.
Whitt Wright, the sopomore quarterback also took advantage
of an Eric Woods scamper and capped off the drive with a
19-yard TD.
Cordova came roaring back with its only touchdown of the
night. Freshman Tim Simon (14 years old) took the handoff
and was hit by several Dora defenders, but he shook them
off and raced 65 yards for Cordova's only touch down. Drew
Short kicked the two-point conversion to bring Cordova to
within 20-11.
Dora's Jarius Johnson recovered a fumble to start the Bulldogs'
next scoring drive. Four plays later, Justin Woods went
in from 30 yards out to give Dora the 26-11 lead.
The Bulldogs' final score came
late in the game when Lavertis Townes picked off a Daniel
Ingram pass and took it 42 yards for the score.
All and all, the Dawgs were glad to
get out of the match with a win. The team has a lot of potential
and a good stable of running backs. The passing is a little
shaky (two interceptions) but that should come along with
some experience.
On September 2, the Dawgs trabel to Holt.
