before. They had to
consider every action they took and the consequence of that action. One
of the authors of the Declaration of Independence said "we must all
hang together or we will most assuredly hang separately." These men
were not soldiers, but common people like you and I who believed so strongly
in America that they placed their names on a document that could have
cost them their lives.
There were a lot of people during that time that were loyal to the crown.
They were loyal mostly because the crown had given them cushy positions
of power and wealth here and they didn't want to let that go. I'm can
almost hear them say..."now if we let the common folk have a say,
I might not get to keep my post."
I'm really glad that there were brave men and women like Thomas Jefferson,
John Adams, Ben Franklin, and many others who had the guts to see us through
those early years. I am also very thankful for all of the soldiers who
have fought and died so that we can enjoy the freedom that the forefathers
envisioned so long ago.
So on this 230 anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence,
have some BBQ and watermelon and raise a glass of good ol' sweet tea to
this great country.
